The Porn Star, Qaddafi, Tax the Rich and More!

My head is exploding from events in the Arab world, both wonderful and terrifying; from the eruption of workers’ power in the U.S. (finally, a two-sided class war!); from trying to free 52 Zimbabwean comrades from Mugabe’s jails, I’ll get to that in a moment; from battling the Israeli government’s refusal to grant a visa to Palestinian author and activist, Omar Barghouti; and somewhere in all of this a gay porn star, Michael Lucas, is using his wealth and connections to shut down social justice organizing at NY’s LGBT Center. Oy vey!

(By the way Lucas, more than 200 activists jeered your attempts to ban pro-Palestine organizing at the Center this past Saturday night at a forum on the Egyptian Revolution, held at the Center, which you no doubt would have attempted to squash as well if you’d known about it.) You can read my retort to Lucas’s madness in Tuesday’s online Advocate, the widest circulation LGBT magazine, which has just offered me a regular column.

I wrote a successful book on sexuality, helped mobilize 250,000 for full LGBT equality and spent more than 25 years as an activist, writer and public speaker, but it took an attack from a porn star/entrepreneur to get the attention of the Advocate‘s editors. Though it’s a sign of the times (36% in latest Gallup poll view socialism favorably) that a prominent gay magazine wants to embrace diversity and provide a platform for a lesbian socialist perspective—kudos to them!

There’s zero time to write more now, so I’m posting info below about each of these issues and causes in the hopes that readers will throw themselves into the fray and help support struggles from Harare and Palestine to NYC. -Sherry

TONIGHT, Feb. 28: I’ll be speaking alongside Stephen Shalom and Ava Houshmand at NYU’s Kimmel Center at 7:30PM on Divestment: A Strategy to End U.S.-Backed Israeli Occupation, opening night of Israeli Apartheid Week.

Solidarity with Zimbabwean socialists: For a brief account of the Mugabe government’s outrageous arrest, beatings and now charges of treason for 52 Zimbabwean socialists and allies (punishable by death) for merely showing Al Jazeera’s coverage of the Egyptian uprising, please read the statement to Release Zimbabwean Socialists here and e-mail/call the authorities listed.

What You Can Do to Let Omar Barghouti Be Heard: Effectively canceling a planned speaking tour, the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem has inexplicably delayed the granting of a visa for Omar Barghouti, founding member of the Palestinian Civil Society Boycott, Divestment, Sanction (BDS) campaign, due to tour the United States this April for the release of his new book, Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights.

For the release of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions, Barghouti has standing invitations for events in New York City, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Brandeis University, Washington DC, LA, and Philadelphia.

As we have in the past, activists can do something today to expedite Omar’s visa and allow people in the United States to hear and meet one of the most powerful figures of the international Palestine solidarity movement.

Here are three things that you can do to help bring Omar Barghouti to the United States:

1. Join the Facebook group, “Let Omar Barghouti Be Heard” and post it to your own wall and invite all your friends as well;

2. Contact the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem and the Department of State to ask them to fulfill the promise from the Obama Administration of “promoting the global marketplace of ideas” and grant Barghouti’s visa immediately.

  1. Looking forward to the column– go, Sherry, go!

    Hey crazy self hating lunatic. You lost. Lucas won. Your event on march 5th will not happen. So shut up.

    • It’s always striking how brave bigots are beneath the cloak of anonymity. When forced to argue their case in public, like at last night’s Divestment event at NYU, they just collapse into blithering idiots parroting inanities.

  3. Did I miss the column? I was really looking forward to it, too!
